Installing the GPU Power Supply Expansion Board into the Dell T620

What you need

You will need the following, assuming that you are not able to find a VDY5T

  1. 1x Dell Poweredge T630 T640 GPU Power Supply Expansion Board PN: X7C1K
  2. Up 2 4x Graphics Card GPU Power Cable PN: DRXPD

Installation Steps

These are the steps I followed to install the GPU Power Supply expansion board. Its not a hard process and look less than 30 minutes.

Accessing the Power Distribution Board

The power distribution board is located under the motherboard. Follow the steps below

  1. Remove the two rear fans
  2. Remove the fan shroud
  3. Remove the PCI retention clip
  4. Remove any PCI cards
  5. Remove wiring to the motherboard (mark everything for easy reassemble – I used labels)
  6. Remove any wiring held in the cable retention clip (front-left side of motherboard
  7. Pull the blue pin on the middle-right of the motherboard
  8. Slide motherboard forward slightly
  9. Tilt motherboard left or right and slowly lift up on one side (you need to clear the mounting pins for the PCI retention clip
  10. Pull the motherboard out of the case
  11. Look down

The image above shows the power distribution board. At the top are the PSU connections. The gold pins at the bottom of the board are where you install the Power Supply expansion board. Just below that are two pins to and two brackets which hold the board in place.

Installing the Power Distribution Board

Lower the board onto the pins slide up.

Install Power Cables

You can install up to 4 cables, I only had two. Route the cables forward and through the metal channel, so that the cables sit will below the motherboard once it is reinstalled.

Reassemble

Carefully lower the motherboard back into the case, lowering the right or left side first. Ensure that all cables are out of the way as you do not want them stuck under the motherboard. Slide the motherboard backwards and allow the pin to snap back into place. Plug everything back in.

Side by Side Comparison: VDY5T and X7C1K

I am not an expert in capacitors or anything remotely related. But I do know what my eyes see and these two cards look VERY similar.

This is the VDY5T. Sorry its the best image I could find

And this is the X7C1K

They look exactly the same. I don’t know enough to tell them apart other than they are stamped a bit differently.

I have yet to test my T630 Power Distribution Board, but I will post when I do, and link back to this post.

    • I’ve had no issues with mine. I bit tricky to get the motherboard to properly lock into place when you reinstall it, so be patient. And label all wires that you unplug from the motherboard (its not hard to figure out what plugs in where, but it’s nice to have labels to fall back on)

Do you have the additional Fan Gantry that is required for additional cooling? The 2 stock fans for the T620 only pull air through the cpu shroud.
